Another thing you understand is caring for your patients. You also know that caring for everyone else often means you don't get the time and opportunity to care for yourself and even your own family the way you'd like to. We understand this too, at Sassy Scrubs.

A Fun Day at the Kissing Booth

Here at Sassy Scrubs, we’ve discovered that many of our customers find us through organic Google searches. Some ‘searchers’ are in the medical profession, some are not. Some are searching specifically for scrubs, some are not.

We’d like to introduce you to one of our customers who is in the medical profession, but needed us for something other than scrubs! He recently found us while on the hunt for ‘Lips Fabric’. That’s right; fabric with lips on it. Let’s find out why...

We’d like you to meet Dana Beatty and the caring staff at Care Pavilion. Dana was recently called upon to help build a Kissing Booth for their recreation department’s Carnival Themed event, held on Thursday, May 26^th in Philadelphia, PA. Rather than paint lips on his booth, Dana sought out fabric with lips on it to add a bit of extra flair to the event. (see photo) He found Sassy Scrubs on Google, and contacted us to buy our Sassy Fabric by the Yard.

During the event, residents of Care Pavilion visited several booths. There was a Ticket Booth, a ‘Candy’ booth (where residents received personal care products) and a Kissing Booth (where residents received Hershey Kiss candies). Dana noted that the event was a great success, despite the heat of the day. And of course, the Kissing Booth was a big hit.

The Care Pavilion, a not for profit group that provides housing and care in Philadelphia for seniors with limited financial means, is a proud member of the NewCourtland Network. Privacy Laws in the Age of Smart Phones & Social Media

Okay, I have to ask: Am I the only one to find it a bit ironic that at about the same time the newest HIPAA laws were put into effect, we witnessed the birth of the age where you can post literally anything, from anywhere, to almost anyplace?

In the age of texting and Facebook posts, has personal privacy flown right out the window?

How many times have you witnessed this scene played out where you work?

- Betty, “Nurse, can you please tell me what my Step-Uncle’s condition is?”
- Nurse, “I’m sorry Betty, but due to HIPAA laws, I’m unable to tell you of your Step-Uncle’s condition unless you’re listed on his HIPAA form.
- Betty, “What do you mean?! I just read on his daughter’s Facebook page that he had complications from his gall bladder surgery! And the post-op pictures that my Grandmother took with her Droid, that were posted on her “Second Cousin’s” profile, have me concerned. And to top it all off, they won’t let me into the Recovery room so that I can see for myself!!!” Betty stomps off to find another nurse, who will tell her what’s going on....

Now, I’m certain that some people don’t mind having their medical history plastered on Facebook by a well-meaning relative or friend; but as for myself, I’d rather not have post-op photos of me appearing anywhere. Period!

On the flip-side of this issue are the benefits of using social media in patient care. Many patients have claimed that they received unprecedented and needed emotional support from friends and family due to a post on Facebook about their medical condition. Although medical care should focus on the patient, Tweets and Facebook posts have the benefit of soothing anxious loved ones as they await news from the operating or recovery room.

With the technology available to us today, packing our bags for a trip to the hospital may now very well need to include a plan and/or instructions for our doctors and family members in regards to how to handle our social media.

As a medical professional, how do you handle this issue? Have you been asked by a patient to provide information to an approved family member so that they can post said information to their favorite social media account?

What do you do when confronted with a friend or distant relative seeking information for a patient that you clearly know is protected by HIPAA laws? Do you stick to your guns – suggesting that Betty, herself, go and ask “Step-Uncle” how he’s doing? (Assuming ‘Step-Uncle’ will let Betty into his room.) Or, do you give in – knowing that Betty probably knows more about “Step-Uncle’s” condition than you do, thanks to “Second-Cousin’s” posts?

I can assure you, that as a patient, I would be furious if my nurse gave information out to my distant relative – well meaning or not. And I’d probably be a little perturbed if my Grandmother took post-op pictures of me - and mad at my daughter for letting my Second Cousin steal Grandma’s phone and post my photos to his profile! Wait, who was supposed to be at the hospital with me again...?

All kidding aside, do you see where this is going? Is there a way for us to protect ourselves from social media overload when it comes to our healthcare privacy? As a medical professional, how do you protect your patient’s privacy? As a patient, what do you do to ensure your privacy? Do you have a “Social Media Healthcare Plan”? Is there such a thing?

Fire Up the Grill!

There is nothing quite like the aroma of food cooking on the grill to let you know that summer has begun. And the taste of grilled food.... mmmmmm. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. The thrill of cooking over an open flame has been appealing since early man discovered fire. Modern-day grilling has been a summer tradition since the early 1950’s, when the Weber grill was made popular by George Stephen, the man who introduced quality grilling to the 'burbs’.

Do you want to be a summertime hero? Become a master griller! From fresh veggies to prime cuts of meat, and everything in between, here are some tips to great grilling:

First, be sure you have the right tools on hand before you start grilling.
Essentials include:
o Fuel, as well as a fire extinguisher
o Long-handled tongs, spatula and a basting brush
o Pot holders and trivets
o Clean plates for cooked meats. Always keep raw meats and their juices, including plates that held raw meats, away from your cooked foods.
o Paper towels for unexpected (or expected) messes
o Aluminum foil, which can be used on the grill for an easy clean-up, as a grease drip pan or as a heat reflector while grilling.
o And what Grill-Master’s tool kit is complete without the perfect apron?

Before firing up your grill, use cooking spray on the grilling rack to help prevent your foods from sticking. This can make your clean up quicker too.
Using charcoal grills. When preparing a charcoal fire, a chimney starter is very effective. Fill the bottom of the chimney with newspaper and fill the top with charcoal. Remove the grate from the top of the grill and set the starter in the grill. Light the newspaper in a couple of spots and convection will suck the flame up into the chimney, igniting the charcoal. In 20 to 30 minutes the coals will be glowing and covered in ash. Turn the coals out into the grill, replace the grate and you’re all set to go! (Note: Have someplace ready to safely set your hot chimney starter down – like on a ceramic tile or a sturdy trivet)
Don’t have a chimney starter? Here are a couple of cost-effective alternatives:
1. Load charcoal up in a tin can, with both ends open, creating a short tube (ie a large coffee tin). Placing newspaper at the bottom of your stack of charcoal, in a circular pattern, will help ignite the charcoal. If you have your charcoal raised up and off from a flat bottom, like on the lower grill that charcoal normally sits on, this will form a natural draft and channel the hot air to the charcoal above it. Leave plenty of room between the charcoal in the tin and the bottom of the grill; this will allow more air to pass through, creating a bigger draft, and your charcoal coals will burn faster. Once your coals are glowing and covered in ash, turn the coals out onto the bottom of your grill.
2. Fill an empty Pringle’s can, non-metal juice container or a cardboard milk carton with charcoal and place it on the bottom of the grill, open side up. Take some dryer lint and form it into a snake shaped rope and wind it down into the top of the charcoal briquettes. Light the dryer lint and the top of the carton. The wax lining slows the burn speed, allowing the coals to heat to the desired temperature. As the carton disintegrates, the coals will spread across the bottom of the grill.

Using marinades. Marinating quickly tenderizes meat and enhances flavor.
o Use about one cup of marinade for every pound of meat.
o Be sure to trim all meat before marinating.
o Marinate in a sealed plastic bag if possible; turning frequently to coat meat evenly.
o Only marinate meat in the refrigerator. Never marinate meat at room temperature!
o The use of marinades that include wine, lemon juice or vinegar, reduce marinating times. Any marinade that contains acid, alcohol or salt should not be used for very long, because it will chemically "cook" or denature the food in it. Marinate food in these marinades for less than 4 hours. Marinades that contain citrus juices, especially lemon or lime juice, should be used for only two hours or less. Marinades that contain no salt, acid or alcohol can be marinated overnight or, in some cases, longer.
o Broil pork or poultry before marinating and grilling to reduce cook time on the grill

Using barbecue sauces. Most traditional barbeque sauces contain sugar or tomato sauce, which can burn very quickly. Add these types of sauces and the end of your cooking time to help reduce the chances of burning the meat.
Grilling vegetables or fish can prove challenging. Using aluminum foil helps to hold in natural oils and liquids, as well as protecting your food from charring. Aluminum foil pouches are a great way to keep tender foods moist while grilling.
Use long-handled tongs to turn your food. Never use a fork! Poking holes in meat actually allows the natural juices to escape, causing your meat to lose flavor and become tough.
For easy cleanup, heat the grill until the temperature is hot enough to kill bacteria. Then scrub the hot grill with a wire brush or crumpled aluminum foil.

I love search engines!! Who's With Me?

"Google it!" How often have we heard that 2-word phrase spoken over the last 11 years?

When I need that obscure tidbit of information, it's Google or Bing to the rescue! From "How to make fresh roasted garlic spread" and "How to finish off a boondoggle project" to "Buying Tortilla Chip Print Nurses Scrubs", search engines have revolutionized the way in which we find exactly what we want - and quickly. As a mom, a definite benefit is that Google can make me look like a genius to my kids in 60 seconds flat! Gotta love that.

As the IT Manager for an e-commerce company, for ME, finding ways to make a search for the "perfect" nursing scrubs both simple and beneficial for YOU, is a balance between hours of finely tuned research and good 'ole fashioned "shoppers intuition".

Part of the fun of having thousands of fabrics to fit most every personality and special interest, is in naming those fabrics! Sassy Scrubs' President, Karen Bradley, spends hours painstakingly creating the perfect name for each of our Sassy Fabrics. Fabric names are vital in making your Google, Bing, or Yahoo search pay off for YOU!

The name of our fabrics not only need to be explanatory and exciting, but relevant. If you type in "Hot Lips Fabric", you don't want to see search results for Loretta Swit - aka Hot Lips Houlihan from the hit TV Show M*A*S*H - you want to see pictures and links so that you can buy fabric with lips printed on it.

When it comes to how to 'search the web wisely', the advice I give to my customers, friends and family is simple - "Be brave, be bold, be specific". It almost always pays off in quick and accurate results that save you time, and hopefully, money!

One Sassy Scrubs customer recently discovered just how worthwhile a well planned Google search can be. For over 40 years, April 22 has marked the celebration of Earth Day.

This year, Earth Day's theme is "A Billion Acts of Green" - A people powered campaign to generate a billion acts of environmental service and advocacy.

In the early 1960's, most Americans were oblivious to the concept of "concern for the environment". One of the early watershed moments for the modern environmental movement came with the release of Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring. Public awareness was raised after this New York Times bestseller sold over half a million copies. The 'official' Earth Day movement started, however, in 1969, after Gaylord Nelson (Earth Day founder and then US Senator from Wisconsin) witnessed the horrible repercussions of the massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Rallying together 85 people from across the country, they organized the first series of coast-to-coast demonstrations on April 22, 1970. On that day, an estimated 20 million people joined together to protest the degradation of the environment.

Much has changed in the past forty years; substances we once thought benign are now considered toxic and climate change has come to the forefront of all environmental concerns. There have also been advances in curtailing pollution such as increased rates of recycling and the trading of pollution credits to control acid rain. But we still have a long way to go.

Currently, the average person produces around 1,460 pounds of garbage each year. Additionally, the World Health Organization reported that developed nations generate, on average, over twenty-five pounds of medical waste per person each year. That is a lot of waste, considering the US has a population of over three million people!

Now on to the hard part: how do we reduce this huge amount of waste?

Reducing waste in general seems far easier than reducing medical waste. Hospitals dispose of miles of IV tubing and nasal cannulas, tons of contaminated sharps, and all kinds of toxic and radioactive material. With all of the public health concerns, is there any good way to reduce or recycle these materials without increasing exposure to infectious disease?

Your Social and Ecological Footprint in Our World

I recently wondered to myself, “What kind of a charitable impact do companies who make Nursing Scrubs have in this world?” What made me so nosy is that we do a fair amount of charitable works here at Sassy Scrubs, and I wanted to see what other scrub companies were doing to help their communities and the world abroad.

That question sent me on an interesting search. Over the next few days, I spent a considerable amount of time poking around on the websites of other Scrub companies. What I found was puzzling, and somewhat disconcerting. Sadly, I found that not only was there no information about the charitable works of other scrub manufacturers or uniform retailers, but there was barely any information available about their companies, period. These discoveries made me sincerely think about the responsibility each and every one of us has to contribute - as a business or as an individual - in some way to make our world a better place.

As a Company, Sassy Scrubs currently champions several social and medical movements; such as Breast Cancer Awareness, Autism Awareness, and the American Cancer Society. We support our injured military members through the frequent donations of scrubs and other needed items to the Landstuhl Hospital Care Project. We help to keep orphans in China warm through our own Blankets for Babies Project, where we send baby and kid sized blankets and quilts directly to orphans in need. Most recently, we’ve launched an orphan vocational assistance & training program through our Orphan Hope Market, giving orphaned and abandoned children hope for their futures.

On the ecological front, we donate our fabric scraps to local organizations, who in turn make colorful and needed quilts and blankets for Veterans, shelter animals, displaced children, hospice residents, and newborns. We recycle our office paper, cardboard, plastic and cans. Paper which cannot be recycled due to containing propriety or sensitive information is shredded for use at our local Humane Society as bedding. In this age of advanced technology, we trust our customers to appreciate that we have chosen not to produce a print catalog, saving tons of paper waste, ink, dyes and chemicals, from polluting our world. We make a very marked and conscious effort to keep our footprint in our local landfills as small as possible, while at the same time, keeping our commitment to our community as large as possible.

Here at Sassy Scrubs, we think these issues are important enough to address with you, our customers. We have often wondered why other scrubs companies don’t talk to their customers about these subjects. Is it because they don’t care? Or do they presume to think their customers don’t care about these very important issues? Well, we think you do care.

Obama Administration Alters Conscience Protections for Health Care Workers

On February 18, 2011, a two-year struggle to find a balance for the rights and beliefs of healthcare workers with the rights for patient services found new ground. The Obama administration rescinded a portion of a Bush-era federal regulation intended to protect health workers who refuse to provide care they find objectionable on moral or religious grounds.

The US Department of Health and Human Services claimed that the current rule was “unclear and potentially overbroad in scope” and issued a revised rule that it said “reaffirms the Department’s commitment to longstanding federal conscience statutes by maintaining and building upon provisions of the Bush administration rule that established an enforcement process for federal conscience laws, while rescinding the definitions and terms of the previous rule that caused confusion and could be taken as overly broad.”

A recent Washington Post article states: "The decision guts one of President George W. Bush's most controversial legacies: a rule that was widely interpreted as shielding workers who refuse to participate in a range of medical services, such as providing birth control pills, caring for gay men with AIDS and performing in-vitro fertilization for lesbians or single women."

Reacting to the decision, Dr. J. Scott Ries, speaking for the 16,000-member Christian Medical Association, protested what he called a decision to “weaken the only federal regulation protecting the exercise of conscience in health care.”

While current language provides protection for healthcare workers who object to providing certain medical services, the revised language does not alter federal health care provider conscience protection statutes as they pertain to abortions and sterilization procedures. The revised language was noted to call for a much narrower version of the original statute.

Understanding that such "Hot Topics" can touch off opinions born from very deep convictions and personal stories for both healthcare workers and patients, we'd like to know what you think:

As a healthcare worker, are you in favor of the recent changes to the federal health care provider conscience protection statutes?
Are you concerned that the revised rule will weaken federal conscience laws and protections for health care workers, despite assurances and language to the contrary?
Do you have any knowledge of a physician or other health care worker being fired, disciplined, or in any way penalized for refusing medical services based on religious or moral grounds?
In your view, did the previous regulation put at risk reproductive health services?
How do you think the changes to the rule will affect patient care in the future?

Surgical Caps Needed if You're Bald?

Surgical Caps are primarily worn to prevent hair from falling onto the patient during surgery, right? But is it necessary to wear a Surgical Cap if you have no hair? According to this excerpt from a recent ASC posting, even bald professionals should protect the patient through use of a Surgical Cap.

Misconception: I am bald, therefore I do not need to wear surgical head gear.
Ms. Joan Blanchard, MSS, BSN,RN, CNOR, CIC, who serves as the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses' liason to the CDC Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee says even healthcare professionals with no hair on their heads should still wear protective surgical caps during surgery. Not doing so can still be hazardous to patients, she says. "It varies from individual to individual, but everyone sheds skin particles from every part of their body every day," Ms. Blanchard says. "So your head constantly shedding is a huge reason to wear surgical head caps. It's simply a quality and infection prevention issue."

Healthy New Year

With the New Year here so quickly - where did 2010 go! - I've made my new resolution. I resolve to take better care of myself in this next 10 years, than I have in the last. Since you wear nursing scrubs, you know most of what I'm talking about. That's right, I vow to eat better, get more rest and exercise, and have all those amazing and not always pleasant diagnostic tests which we are so lucky to have available at our disposal.

Besides these obvious steps, I vow to keep my temper better. To listen more, and to interrupt others less. To smile more and find that elusive silver lining more often. To worry less about things I can't control. And to allow others to express their opinions, without adding my "but..." to the conversation. I hope to read more, about more diverse subjects, and therefore to learn more about the world, and myself. I hope to become a better person this year, and this decade, than I ever have been in the past. A better person, a stonger part of my family, a more dedicated friend. I want to be honest, generous of spirit and time, and dependable. I want to be fun and happy. I want to be healthier for myself and for my family.

A new year focuses our attention on new possibilities. Possibilities we can become, and circumstances we can change. I hope you take the opportunity to reflect on who you'd like to be this year. How you can be healthier too. Our possibilities are indeed endless, for a Happy New Year.

Sassy Scrubs, ABC Family and Disney Partner to Set a New World Record

Sassy Scrubs, was pleasantly surprised to learn of the destination of a very unique order they received. We were even more surprised to learn that same order resulted in our participation in a new World Record.

Sassy Scrubs makes custom scrubs uniforms for nurses, veterinarians and dentists, but we also offer children’s play wear - miniature scrubs uniforms we call Kids Scrubs. Sassy Scrubs received a call from a marketing promotions company requesting a large quantity of Kids Scrubs Pants in the color Fireball Red. The order was for Red Kids Scrubs pants in multiple sizes, and though curious, we did not know the reason for, or the destination of the order.

The mystery was soon solved when the promotional company finally shared that the Red Kids Scrubs were ordered by Disney to help promote their holiday film “Santa Baby 2: Christmas Maybe”. Disney and the ABC Television Group staged a large gathering of “Santa’s Elves” – dressed in the Sassy Scrubs’ Red Pants, to help support and publicize the movie. To help draw in the record-breaking crowd, ABC and Disney offered prizes such as big screen TV’s!

The successful promotion, held in New York City at The Pond in Bryant Park, set a new Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of “Santa’s Elves” in one place. Stars of the movie, Jenny McCarty and Dean McDermott were on-hand to rally over 250 “Elves” thereby clinching the New World Record. The official Elf costumes, of which Sassy Scrubs’ pants were a part, were handed out to the participating “Elf” members in the crowd. The participating Elves were able to keep their “Elf Pants” as a memento of the occasion.

It was very exciting to realize we were a part of history, especially for something this much fun.

"I wish to be a Veterinarian"

Recently, Sassy Scrubs President, Karen Bradley noticed an order for some Sassy Kids Scrubs from the Make-A-Wish Foundation of North Texas. Sassy Scrubs immediately contacted Make-A-Wish to let them know that we would be honored to donate these scrubs, hoping that we could play a small part of making this very special Wish come true.

Ten year old, Katelyn, is fascinated by animals of all sizes and colors! She loves learning about animals, especially dogs and cats, through books, movies and television shows. When Katelyn was given the opportunity to have her wish granted by the Make-A-Wish Foundation of North Texas, it came as no surprise when Katelyn wished to be a Veterinarian for a day!

On wish day, Katelyn was greeted by a limousine that took her to her new employer, Lakeside Animal Hospital in Fort Worth. Not only did she arrive in style, Katelyn also wore Sassy Scrubs and a personalized lab coat that was sure to make all her co-workers jealous!

Once at the hospital, Dr. Katelyn was able to pet and hold the patients, take their vitals, and even witness a few surgeries! At lunch time, Katelyn indulged in her favorite foods! As a token of thanks, the staff surprised her with a basket full of goodies and, more importantly, her very own black kitten! This is truly a wish that will provide memories to last a life time!

"Why Should You Iron Your Scrubs?" Blog

My mother used to iron everything. Jeans, pillowcases, underwear, you name it - she ironed it. Which means, as a teenager, I ironed it all too. Saturday morning meant standing at the ironing board, with the radio on, ironing my father's shirts and my brother's jeans.

Now I wear Scrubs and said to heck with that!

I love cotton. And I love cotton scrubs. Luckily, today's cotton fabrics need much less care than those in my mother's household. Today, cotton does not mean just cotton. It means perma-pressed cotton, or wrinkle resistant cotton or wrinkle free poly-cotton blends. It means scrubs with no wrinkles. It means release from Saturday mornings chained to the ironing board! Hallelujah!

Most cotton fabrics, and for us, that means cotton scrubs fabrics, are made with a special resin finish to help the scrubs fabric resist wrinkles. This is a huge time-saver for nurses, doctors, dentists and veterinarians who wear scrubs to work every day. Most medical scrubs are now wash and wear. Take those medical scrubs right from the dryer and fold them up, or hang them on a hanger, and you're good to go! Easy, comfortable and good looking medical scrubs are the standard today, and what you'll find at Sassy Scrubs.

We know some nurses still iron all their medical scrubs. We know some nurses never iron their medical scrubs! It's all a matter of taste, and sometimes, only a matter of getting to the dryer in time to make sure your scrubs remain wrinkle-free, as nature (and the new resin finish cotton scrubs fabrics) intended.

Sometimes, I'm nostalgic for the good old days when my mother had fresh, hot chocolate chip cookies waiting for me when I got home from school. So, how do you think your custom Sassy Scrubs are made? I bet it's not how you think they're made! Come on, let's find out how close you were....

Other Garment Manufacturers
Most garments today are made in large, dingy factories, with noise and dust prevalent. Low-paid workers hunch over dangerous machines or control giant "fabric stamp-out" machines which cut dozens of garments at a time. This type of garment production occurs in an off-shore factory where environmentally friendly manufacturing, worker safety and employee concerns aren't even a blip on the factory's radar. Personal service?...Non-Existent. Special options?...Impossible. Custom lengths?...Nada. It is a scary business, with little thought given to the needs of the worker much less the customer.

Where is Sassy Scrubs?
Here at Sassy Scrubs, we have an entirely different approach. We are located in breathtaking Upstate New York, far from any big city, and your garments are made right here. That's right! They're made right here in the USA.

You get to choose your scrubs fabrics from over 1,400 fabrics that Sassy Scrubs has available. Next, you get to choose your scrubs options, resulting in a well fitting, well designed garment which fits your lifestyle, interests, unique body needs as well as your work needs. That's when Sassy Scrubs takes over.

Processing Your Scrubs Order
Once your order is received at Sassy Scrubs, it is reviewed to be sure that there weren't any unintentional ordering errors made. For example, we want to be sure if you really did intend to order that one Maternity Scrub Top along with your other Men's Lodge Medical Scrub Tops. Maybe you live in Arizona and ordered a pair of heavy flannel Scrub Pants in July. Well, we just may email you to be sure that you really want to be warmer than you already are in the middle of the desert. Next, your order is recorded and sent on its way to our Cutting Department.

Hand Cutting Your Scrubs Order
Once your order is in our Cutting Department, our staff locates the fabrics designated on your order and proceeds to lay the fabric onto a large, flat cutting surface. The pattern for the scrubs garment you ordered is spread out onto the fabric, aligned with the grain of the fabric so that the finished garment hangs properly. Our Cutting staff uses a Rotary Cutter - think pizza cutter - to follow the outline of the pattern to create the pieces specific to that garment. The patterns are adjusted at this time to your specific needs. For example, an adjustment is made to the pattern if a petite or tall hem is ordered, if you request no side vents on a Medical Scrub Tops or if a Knit Cuff for your Basic Scrub Pants is requested. Each garment order is examined closely by our Cutters to be sure that your scrubs specifications are met. As the Cutter finishes each garment, pockets are cut; v-bands are cut; facings for jackets are cut - all by hand. Adding the appropriate size and care tags to the garment pattern pieces, the Cutter places all the components into a package - ready for your order's transfer to our Sewing Department.

Sewing Your Scrubs Garment
A Sassy Scrubs Seamstress chooses the garments she wishes to work on that particular day. She may choose all blue garments so she does not need to change threads on her sewing machine or serger machine so many times that day. Or, she may choose to sew jackets because that is her favorite garment to sew. Perhaps she may be asked to help finish a particular order so that it can be mailed out that day; so she'll choose the remaining pieces of that order to complete. Or maybe she just spied a new fabric on your order that she has not sewn before and she chooses to sew that garment. Yes, we get excited about new and colorful fabrics too!

Our Seamstresses complete one entire garment at a time. They care about the small details. They care about how they place the pockets on your tops. They care about making sure that the drawcord is secure on the back of your scrubs pants so that it does not pull out in the wash. Every garment is carefully sewn, individually and completely, by one seamstress. Because she "owns" your garment, each Seamstress takes extreme pride in how she sews "her" garments. Who benefits from all of this attention to detail? You do!

Inspecting Your Scrubs
The next step for your garment is the Inspection process. Each piece is pressed by hand and measured to make sure that it meets the specified parameters for each size. No top can be approved if it has more than one-half inch variance in circumference from our size chart. No pants can be approved if the length is not at least what you ordered. Size tags should match the size garment you have ordered. Care tags should match the fabric make-up of the particular fabric ordered. Inspectors must also be intimately familiar with all of our 1,400 fabrics so that they can verify that the garment you ordered and the garment that was hand sewn is indeed made from our Asian Dragonlore fabric and not our Asian Dragon Harmony fabric.

Inspection is an important job, as it's the last step before your scrubs order is packaged and mailed to you. Thanks to the sharp eyes of our Inspectors, our mistakes are low and our customer satisfaction is high!

The Personality of Sassy Scrubs
Sassy Scrubs provides an outstanding level of custom service to all of our customers and our staff takes that commitment seriously. But it is not just all serious business here at Sassy Scrubs.

The people in our Cutting Department sing while they work! Our staff has jigsaw puzzles spread out on the lunchroom table for friendly puzzle competitions and they often hide pieces from each other, insuring "their" puzzle is completed first. We have pizza Fridays and Birthday celebrations for each staff member. Staff members teach each other new crafts and cut out quilt squares from our scrap fabric at break and lunch. Sure, we have fun here at Sassy Scrubs, but the most fun for us is the pleasure we take in the compliments received by our customers. Each staff member "owns" his or her job and performs their duties with you in mind. You, our customers, see this in the quality and attention to detail shown in your scrubs.

I grew up watching all those great sci-fi shows of the 70's and 80's. The characters were often beaming out or stepping through some mysterious portal to an altered reality and then trying to figure out how to get back to the world they knew before. This journey was always a tough feat, but our intrepid travelers generally made it.

Well, we can help you with your Altered Reality travels too. And it is way easier than those sci-fi characters could ever have imagined.

Sometimes our customers order their custom made Sassy Scrubs a bit too long, or a bit too large. Then they send us panicked emails asking how to fix the problem. Never fear! The Sassy Scrubs Alterations Department is on patrol - ready to help rescue you and get you back to your journey in well-fitting scrubs.

If you need a tweak here or there, a bit of hem shortening, a pocket moved or added, a pant leg taken in a bit or your Medical Scrubs Top taken down to the next size, we can absolutely Alter your Reality. Just email us with your request for alterations. We'll let you know how much to include with your garments to cover your return postage, and offer to Alter your Sassy Scrubs for free! That's right! A trip back to Reality, at no charge. What a deal!

Now, just as you can't create matter, we also can't make your garments longer, or larger than you originally ordered them. The Laws of Physics just don't work that way. It's the same thing in the Reality of Altering. So it's always the best idea to view our Size Chart before placing an order...think of it as your road map through the Reality of Fitting. (Oh brother, I know that was really bad...). Anyway, we're here to help you at Sassy Scrubs, and you can count on us to get you out of that Altered Reality and back to your well fitting scrubs world. The Importance of College Education

During an individual's High School career, they may begin to question the importance of a college education. They find themselves asking the question, "Is College really worth it?" The answer to this question is more likely, yes! Attending college provides graduates with many more opportunities that aren't available to those who have no higher education.

For manyt high school students, the ability to immediately generate an income after graduation may be an appealing thought. They may also be dissuaded by the rising cost of tuition. While it is true that a higher education may be one of the largest expenses one will ever face, the importance of a college education has been quite evident in terms of earning potential in today's economy.

A college education can lead to more opportunities in working life, especially for higher paid occupations. When persuing a continued education, students could gain opportunities to work with some outstanding professionals in their field of study. Individuals would also become aware of what is accessible to them within different levels of education.

Many programs such as those in Medicine, Nursing, OT, PT, and others offer challenging and rewarding careers after graduation. If you are in one of these programs you'll be preparing for many opportunities available to you once your college education is complete. Realizing your college education is an investment into your future is the first step.

Halloween and Safety Post

Do your children enjoy Halloween? They should! It's considered a special time in thier lives where; for one day only, they get to have fun with friends, wear scary costumes, and enjoy candies and sweets! Halloween is when your entire block is decorated with bat-shaped cut-outs, lighted jack-o-lanterns, and other spooky yet crafty artwork! One of the best parts of Halloween is Trick or Treating for delicious candy and snacks, but it's also important that everyone stay safe on Halloween, especially children who are going out. Here's some Safety Tips to remember when going Trick or Treating!

Always have a chaperon or an adult with children when Trick or Treating. This is an important tip to follow, especially for younger children who are considering going alone. Never let a child go Trick or Treating by themselves. This can be considered unsafe and it's not as fun if the kids are by themselves. If your child doesn't want any parents to come, you can always have a friend or older sibling to go with them. Older siblings like candy too you know!

Being bigger, does mean better! Children as well as adults can benefit from large Trick or Treating groups. This way the kids can be around thier friends, and adults will also have company. Plus, it's much easier for a group of adults to handle a group of children then just one adult alone. Remember, there is more safety by the numbers.

Try to avoid houses with their lights off. Young children may believe that every house in the neighborhood is participating in Halloween. This isn't true and can turn into a scenerio that should be avoided of. It's important to inform children the reasons for a resident having thier lights off. Reasons may include that the residents aren't home; the aren't participating in Halloween, they're out of candy, or other possible dangerous situations.

As a chaperon or parent, it's important to let children know the dangers of open candy given to them. Candy received already opened is considered extremely dangerous and can cause serious health issues to adults and children. If you see anything like this laid out or in a child's candy bag, throw it out without question. Be sure to inspect your child's candy completely before allowing your child to enjoy the treats.

Talking about Halloween, remember that safe and comfortable Kids Scrubs are always a great costume choice. Drama Firewall President's Post

Unless you work alone, in a hut on a mountaintop, you are exposed to drama. Two co-workers have differing opinions on procedures, and each wants you to solve the deadlock. One co-worker feels slighted by another's comments or actions and wants to vent to you, or worse, draw you into the fight. Co-workers, or even supervisors, have ulterior motives, or political agendas which influence what they do and want you on their side. Drama, drama, drama.

While it is tough to avoid being drawn into these conflicts, it can be a career suicide to jump in with both feet. A better personal policy is to try to remain Switzerland. Just stay neutral.

Gossip? Don't play this game. Don't begin to spread it. Gossip hurts people and one of those casualties could be you.

Is there controversy at work? Stay out of it. Your opinion will probably not change anyone's mind and you'll retain respect by all if you just remain neutral.

Need company? Have a strong opinion which may end up being drama quicksand and suck you right into the middle of a dirty, nasty mudhole? Go home and tell your dog. Call your mother. Or take a long jog to work off the steam. Just don't spread it around at the work, looking for a confidant and partner in your need to be right. Don't leave the Switzerland boundaries, or the drama will get you.

Matching Scrubs President Post

I take a good look around my house from time to time and decide I should really think about changing this or that, becuase it does not match something else. But I don't really like the boring matchy-matchy approach with my home decorating. A well known interior designer recently stated, "Decorations and furniture in your home do not need to match, but they should look like they know each other." So, that made me start to think about my own closet and scrubs.

Do your scrubs look like they know each other? Have you ever bought scrubs from one company to find that their "navy print" doesn't match well with the "navy solids" that you already own? I have. So, they look like they know each other, but don't exactly coordinate very well.

That's why we built our Coordinating Fabrics feature at Sassy Scrubs. We have a real, live person compare each and every new scrub print with every solid fabric we have to see how it matches. Then, we post those matching fabrics together so our customers can see what watches "in person". We are not happy if our prints and solids just know each other... they need to match, or coordinate. We want you to be happy when your scrubs arrive, and we know you'll look great when you wear them, becuase your Sassy Scrubs will coordinate.

So, maybe my home decorarting is alright as it is, since most all my rooms know each other. But, I'm happy I can choose from Coordinating Fabrics for scrubs, becuase when I'm wearing them, knowing each other is just not good enough.

We have some very creative customers here at Sassy Scrubs. Knowing we custom make all of scrubs, customers sometimes ask us to make their scrubs with unique, creative features. I want to share with you how Michele, of Mesa, Arizona, customized her Medical Scrub Top.

Michele owns a wonderful business offering riding saddles and other supplies with the health of the horse in mind. So, it was natural that she ordered her scrub top in our horse themed fabrics, Romanza and Native Horse. Being the creative gal that she is, Michele asked us to add coordinating, solid color trim to her scrubs at the pockets, sleeves and V-Neck. Michele was absolutly thrilled with her new customized scrubs! She mentioned to us that she already recieved numerous comments on how nice her new scrubs look.

Tattoos in Nursing President Post

Since body art has become so fashionable in the past few years, new workplace Dress Code regulations are springing up to address the practice, with the goal of promoting and protecting the professional appearance of nurses. Some hospitals and other facilities have strict policies no regarding visible tattoos and piercings, some requiring that they be covered by bandages. Other facilities allow tattoos and piercings to be visible as long as they aren't "offensive".

Has your facility instituted a tattoo and piercing policy? How has that affected you and your co-workers? Do you believe that these policies will impact your patients?

Summer Safety President’s Post

Currently, I have an intern who has been working with us here at Sassy Scrubs. He also happens to be a part-time lifeguard at Keuka College. We just got talking the other day on just how important water safety is and how many people just don't know enough about it. With summer approaching, we felt that this topic was appropriate and a great reminder for us all to be vigilant and careful while enjoying the water this summer.

So we decided for this week's Presidential Post, we would share some useful tips and create some more awareness on water safety and the signs of drowning. By no means do we mean to frighten anyone, but then again awareness is key and we want to share some of these numbers with you. According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control, there were 3,443 unintentional fatal drownings in the U.S. in 2007. This is an average of ten deaths per day with one out of every five of those victims fourteen years of age or younger. These numbers are staggering, but with some awareness we hope that these tragic accidents can be prevented.

Francesco A. Pia, a water safety expert, and Mario Vittone, a writer on maritime safety, offer the tips with noticing potential drowning victims:

In the vast majority of cases, those who are drowning are physiologically incapable of calling out for help becuase the human body is wired to give priority to the primary respiratory function, breathing, and not to speech, which is a secondary overlaid function.
Drowning people's mouths aren't above water long enough to enable them to exhale, draw breath and call out, they have seconds to exhale and inhale quickly before thier mouths go back underwater.
When we are drowning, our natural instinct is to press our arms outwards and downwards onto the surface of the water so we can leverage our bodies upwards to catch our breath.
Waving arms about to draw attention is a voluntary movement: we have to stop drowning first before we can physically perform voluntary movements like waving for help, grabbing rescue equipment or moving towards a rescuer.

Since the signs of drowning are contrary to what so many people believe, we wanted to bring more awareness to this subject while reminding everyone to always keep safety in mind. We wish you and your family continue to have a great summer and stay safe!

Baby Hats President’s Post

I just had to share these adorable baby hats with you. They were sent to us by Maureen from Convent Station, New Jersey, to send to an orphanage in China. You probably know that we send baby blankets and quilts, made by our own Sassy Scrub fabric scraps, to children in China's orphanages. Rather than fill up our local landfills with useful fabric scraps, we use the to keep babies warm in usually ill-heated facilities where they are raised.

We recently discovered that the children can use warm, soft caps too. Generous individuals like Maureen have been sending us baby and children's caps we can tuck into our boxes of blankets. If there is one thing that we've found through this endeavor, it's that the world is full of generous people. Thank you so much, Maureen, and the other individuals who have helped us keep "our" orphans warm.

Support Our Troops!

Sassy Scrubs, a custom medical uniforms manufacturer and e-tailer, from Penn Yan, NY, recently continued their efforts to support American service members by donating two large boxes of scrub pants. These garments were requested by US troop hospitals in Germany and the Middle East for use by staff and patients, who use the scrub pants as comfortable sleepwear.

Company President, Karen Bradley, states “We have participated in the Landstuhl Hospital Care Project for many years now, and through this organization, can determine what the real needs are for our servicemen and women.” In the past, this has meant donating scrub tops for front line medics; scrub pants for wounded patients and hospital staff; and colorful surgical caps for use by hospital surgeons and medics in the field. Another regular need which has been met by Sassy Scrubs in the past is patriotic themed med bags, for storage of patient personal effects, records, and medications as they are transported from field to hospital. To lift spirits at the holidays, Sassy Scrubs is also working to send Christmas Stockings, which have been requested, to the service members who’ll be visiting the overseas hospitals at holiday time.

Since the medical uniform manufacturer custom makes all the garments they produce, Sassy Scrubs is ready at a moment’s notice to focus on a specific need to help US troops. “We keep an eye on the needs as they are posted”, states Bradley, “and help when we can fulfill a request.” The Company expects to continue their donations to support American service members as long as there is a need.

Relieving Stress From a Long Day

We all carry stress from the day to day challenges of everyday life. Your car won’t start; your washer broke; you spilled your coffee on those important papers….it happens everyday. But, if you wear scrubs, you know that these stress-builders are minor compared to what you face at work everyday. Helping care for the sick or hurting is indeed gratifying but it takes its toll on you, emotionally and physically, from the stress you just can’t shake when you leave work. If you don’t relieve the pressure, you are soon sick, cranky, or burned out, yourself.

My solution to relieve stress is a shopping trip for something small but luxurious (and usually made from chocolate), followed by a hot bubble bath, a hot cup of Jasmine Tea, and a thrilling paperback. That little bit of pampering makes me feel like I can face another challenge with a bit of an attitude adjustment. It’s not much, but it is enough to get me through.

If you could have any type of various superpowers, what would they be and how would they work? Would you use them for good or for evil? I know when I was little and probably still to this very day, one of my favorite superheroes was Spiderman. I even remember my parents buying me Spiderman pajamas that I would not only wear for bed, let me tell you. I’ve always been mesmerized by his power and agility along with his spider web-slinging abilities. Fighting for good and having two completely different identities where he could be just an ordinary guy via Peter Parker and then be a hero and help fight crime and save lives through Spiderman. So if I were to choose a superhero’s power to mimic it would most likely be Spiderman. Ironically enough, I am absolutely terrified of spiders and have been since I was really little. However, the idea of shooting web out of my wrist to say reach for a television remote that is out of my reaching grasp would be astonishing!

All fun and games put aside, it would be fantastic to be able to have special inhuman powers to help save lives or even fight crime. However, knowing that can never be, doctors and nurses throughout the world are saving lives everyday within their very human profession. I think we can all agree that in their own way, doctors and nurses around the world have a niche in the superhero category. They are just normal people who have families and interests just the same as everyone else. But, when they come into work and put their scrub uniform on, they become superheroes.

That’s not to say that doctors and nurses are the only superheroes in the world, but they definitely work in attire that is comfortable and convenient to accomplish their difficult task at hand. Eaves Family Dental was pleased to find a local company that could meet their specialized uniform needs. Eaves Family Dental, which specializes in cosmetic dentistry, implants, full arch reconstruction, and family dentistry, was founded in 1984 and employs a number of dental professionals and reception staff. Sassy Scrubs, manufacturer of custom made uniforms, recently partnered with Steuben Glass, manufacturer of the world’s finest lead crystal, to provide a solution to better protect the glass company’s employees. In the process of glass-making, certain abrasives are necessary, which require finishing employees to wear a uniform jacket to help protect their clothing and skin from stains and abrasions.

Steuben Glass not only needed a quality garment that would withstand the processes of glass-making, but that would also withstand their rigorous cleaning processes. High on the list of priority for Steuben Glass, of course, was to be sure the garments would still be comfortable for the artisans to wear.

I Love Sandals! How About You?

I simply love sandals! In fact, one of my favorite things about Spring weather is that I get to go into my closet and pull out all of those great sandals and cute little shoes that have been hibernating all winter! I work in an office setting, and sandals are so much easier to kick off during the day than a pair of sneakers or boots! Your Guide to a Spring Fresh Life

Spring fresh could apply to any number of things: air fresheners, laundry detergent, or even deodorant sticks. However, today it applies to your career. Most people need a stagnant career like they need stagnant underarms. You need to keep both fresh for optimum happiness!

It is easy to get stuck in a pattern, especially when it is a comfortable one. You go to the same job every day, get to know the people you work with, master the skills needed for your position and life seems good. Why uproot that pattern when change can be a big and scary thing? Because in today’s fast-paced world, with changing technology and new scientific discoveries, staying in the same place will get you nowhere.

We all need changes now and then to keep us engaged, to keep us on our toes, and to do the best job that we can. So how can one go about making changes? Here are some ideas:

Take a continuing education class. Refresh your skills or learn new ones. Learning more can only enhance your job performance and make you more marketable should you choose to look for another job some day.

Go back to school. If you want to take a larger leap, go back to school on a more regular basis. You can get that degree you always wanted, change the direction of your career, or position yourself to move up the ladder. If you are lucky, your employer may foot part of the bill.

Subscribe to trade publications. Journals offer recaps of the latest innovations and interviews with people who are doing interesting things in your field. They offer lots of information so you can stay in the loop, and are a great place to look for inspiration.

Change positions. This move can be vertical or horizontal. If you feel you have mastered your position and are qualified to manage those in your position, try a move up the ladder. If you would like a more drastic change, or have become bored with the area where you work, change fields. Starting all over again in a new field, but with a well-stocked skill set, can be a great experience.

Change your outlook. Sometimes all we need is to look at things from a different perspective.

Mentor. Working with people new to your field can expose you to new techniques and other information that wasn’t around when you were in school. While mentoring is often considered a one-way relationship, it really benefits the mentor and the mentee in that the mentor learns about the latest in education and is exposed to that exhilaration and idealistic passion so common in fresh graduates, and the mentee gains the benefit of someone with experience.

April 22 marks the 40th celebration of Earth Day.

Forty years ago, 20 million people joined together to protest the degradation of the environment. Much has changed in the past forty years; substances we once thought benign are now considered toxic and climate change has come to the forefront of all environmental concerns. There have also been advances in curtailing pollution such as increased rates of recycling and the trading of pollution credits to control acid rain. But we still have a long way to go.

The World Health Organization reported that developed nations generate, on average, over twenty-five pounds of medical waste per person each year. That is a lot of waste, considering the US has a population of over three million people! Now on to the hard part: how do we reduce this huge amount of waste?

The "Localvore" Movement and Sassy Scrubs

Have you ever heard the term “localvore”? Localvores, broadly defined, are people who focus on consuming locally produced foods. The idea behind localvore-ism is that when one buys locally, the local economy, community, and environment are strengthened because money stays within the community, relationships are formed between producer and consumer, and fewer resources are needed to move the food such a short distance.

Should Mandatory Overtime be Banned?

We have all heard (or experienced) horror stories about nurses forced to work overtime: exhausted, stressed, and ready to quit. And who can blame them? Being forced to work overtime for fear of disciplinary action or worse wouldn’t make me want to go to work either. At the same time, it is scary to think that these exhausted nurses are being forced to provide care to patients. Patient care can be difficult enough for well-rested, unstressed nurses, there’s no need to create more obstacles that could compromise competent care!

To solve the problem, nursing organizations have been pushing for protective legislation and have found some legislators willing to lend an ear. Bans on mandatory overtime for nurses seem to be popping up nationwide. Here in New York, the state that Sassy Scrubs calls home, a law banning mandatory overtime went into effect just last summer. Politicians and nursing advocacy groups alike have touted the new law as a measure to both improve the quality of healthcare and keep nurses from leaving the profession.

I Don't Recycle

Yep, that's what the State of Georgia says in their current social marketing program to bring attention to environmental responsibility. The shocking claim is meant to show how ridiculous we all sound if we do not recycle and do our part to help clean up our community and our environment. Apparently their approach has been pretty effective and has resulted in a 50.7% increase in recycling in their state! Way to go, Georgians!

Here at Sassy Scrubs, we have always recycled. From our office paper to our scrap pieces of fabric, we generate almost no trash to clog up landfills and waterways. In fact, did you know that Sassy Scrubs uses our scrap fabric to create blankets and quilts, which we then donate to orphanages in China? That's right - we generate a good amount of scrap fabric and it virtually all gets recycled. We're pretty sure that we are the only hospital scrub company in the USA who can make that claim. Network, network, network - It never hurts to expand your web of contacts; you never know where things will lead. Family friends and old classmates may have connections or know about openings that are otherwise unadvertised and be able to get you in the door. Professional nursing organizations are another great place to meet people in your field and form connections.

Keeping up appearances - Everyone knows about dressing appropriately for interviews, but what about other ways potential employers view job applicants? It takes mere seconds to perform an online search and you may be surprised to see what an employer can find out about you. There is a lot to be said for using privacy settings on social networking sites and maintaining an appropriate online presence. Search for yourself periodically to make sure those unsavory spring break photos from college don’t pop up.

Make an impression - When you have no job, business cards don’t make sense, but have you ever heard of calling cards? Calling cards are similar to a business card but lack a job title. They are a quick way of leaving someone with your contact information and are a fantastic tool to use when networking. If you want to make them noticeable, personalize them with graphics or have them letterpressed for extra flair.

Preparation is key - Once you begin interviewing, adequately research potential employers so that you can have a meaningful conversation with them. Did your interviewer attend the same school as you? Is the company actively involved with the community? What does the employer value and want to convey to the public as its strength? In addition to demonstrating your interest in the employer, it also helps you ask more focused questions to help you decide if it is the right fit for you.

Simple etiquette - Thank you notes are simple and quick, but they leave a lasting impression. Follow interviews with a thank you note that touches on something discussed in your interview and convey your continuing interest. If the employer communicated with you through email, it is also perfectly acceptable to send your thank you note by email. Even if you are not offered employment, good manners and continued interest may keep you on an employer’s radar for future openings.

Stress. It happens to all of us. Some people get stressed out because the mail is late. Some people let things roll off of them and rarely feel stress. Some people thrive on it.

But what about the kind of stress that has a constant, monotonous presence in our lives; the kind of stress that makes us wake up with clenched teeth and a headache, makes us irritable, and results in chronic hypertension? This kind of stress is bound to plague us at some point in our lives, probably more than we would like.

Financial problems, death in the family or difficult situations at work can lead to prolonged stress. Many times these stressful situations are unavoidable, and instead of trying to prevent them we are better off learning how to cope with them. Here is a list of our favorite ways to relieve stress (note how much better they are than suffering from a heart attack!):

• Indulge. Go for the good stuff! That expensive, drool-worthy, tea-infused chocolate? Try it! Don’t try a pound of it, no need for excessive indulgence, just enough to bask in its excellence and treat yourself to something special.

• Exercise. It might not sound fun, but it always helps to work out tension with a little physical exertion, and it can be fun if you make an effort. Take a walk with a friend, soothe yourself with some yoga, or get in some good meditation time while you swim laps.

• Bond with an animal. Studies show that people with pets have lower levels of stress and recover more quickly from stressful events. Spend some time with your favorite companion animal or go to a shelter and give the animals there some much needed attention. As an added bonus, you will likely end up with a friend for life.

• Spend time with your favorite people. What better place to be than with the people you love? They listen to you and make you laugh. We especially enjoy kicking back in our comfy scrubs at home on lazy weekend mornings and eating brunch with our favorite people.

100 Quilts Donated by Sassy Scrubs Employee

Ruth Ann Chabot, of Canandaigua, who is an employee at Penn Yan’s Sassy Scrubs, received an award from the Company for her donation of over 100 hand-made baby quilts she has made since May. She has donated her quilts to the Blankets for Babies Project, which makes, collects and ships baby blankets and quilts, through Sassy Scrubs, to orphanages in China.

Before beginning her quilt making marathon, Ruth Ann had attempted only one other quilt, years ago, and was not fond of the experience. Using fabric scraps available through her work at Sassy Scrubs, a custom scrubs uniform manufacturer, and a significant fabric stash at home, she tried quilt making again and found she greatly enjoyed designing the quilts and seeing them come together. With so much experience since May, she has found she can now look at a photo of an intricate quilt and cut and sew it without a pattern.

She has begun photographing each quilt she donates, and constructing an album, so she can remember the prints and designs of each after they have been shipped to keep babies warm.

In appreciation of her dedication to the orphans of China, Sassy Scrubs awarded Ruth Ann with a plaque declaring her the “Quilting Queen” along with a gift certificate to Jo-Ann Fabrics.

Texting and Sleep Deprivation

I just read an article regarding the texting practices of teens and college students - specifically regarding their inability to "turn off" and go to sleep. It seems that texting a friend, or a group of friends, is so appealing to this group that they sacrifice their sleep so they can stay in the loop, and be connected. Sort of like the old water cooler - or nurses' desk - for sharing gossip and information. The fact that many use their cell phones as alarm clocks seems to compound the problem - the devices are turned on, and receiving messages, so the messages must be answered. Immediately.

Is this the only age group subject to these pressures? Have you ever pulled an all-nighter just texting your friends, even though you knew you'd pay for it the next day with exhaustion? H1N1 Vaccine - Required or Fired

Sassy Scrubs is interested in learning your opinion on the new flu vaccine regulation recently approved by the Department of Health in New York State. In mid-August, the State of New York approved an emergency regulation requiring mandated influenza vaccinations for healthcare workers. In addition to seasonal flu, the regulation could apply to H1N1, commonly called the Swine Flu, if a vaccine is available in sufficient supply. The regulation requires employers of hospital, home care, and hospice workers to require vaccination. Those workers not complying by the end of November may have their employment terminated. Regulation of this type can and probably will affect you whether you live in New York State or not.

How do you feel about this mandated vaccination regulation? Is this a necessary move to protect our healthcare workers and the general population, or a radical measure which infringes upon the rights of healthcare workers? What do you think?

What Do Dental Scrubs and the Little Shop of Horrors Have in Common?

Let me start off by telling you, dear readers, that I am scared of going to the dentist. And by scared, I mean I have nightmares about Steve Martin from the Little Shop of Horrors movie, where every time he talks, what comes out of his mouth are not words, but the screech of drills. Angry drills. Big angry drills designed for nothing but the torture of the innocent.

When I went in a few years ago to get my wisdom teeth taken out, I was asked to either take the knock-out gas (or what I like to call the breath of god), or leave with my teeth intact and an indefinite ban from the premises.

Apparently I made what they were calling "cacophonous womanly screams", or what I thought was more accurately deemed "polite oral protests of justified terror". I took the gas.

So, I went in for my every-other-annual cleaning last week. (They give me a discount, as long as I promise not to come in any more often.) As usual for my cleaning, I had signed my waiver for the gas. I was laid back in the chair of fear, sweating profusely, feet and hands twitching, eyes either shifting rapidly back and forth or staring at the lovely sofa size posters of gum disease and worst-case-scenario plaque buildup. You know, calm and composed.

I'm waiting for the lady to administer the gas (to this day, I have no idea what my dentist actually looks like), when in waddles this pregnant woman, which for the purposes of this blog, we'll call Margot, the bringer of serenity. Or just Margot. Yeah, so Margot's pregnant. Really pregnant. To the point where watching her walk around is like seeing a new driver try to back a tractor trailer through road cones. Tiny road cones. With camouflage. What I mean to say is, I think the baby's driving. Perhaps we'll forget that analogy, shall we? Yes, let's shall.

Margot comes in pushing the gas trolley with her belly. In an attempt to show her how calm and well behaved I am, I ask where she gets her scrubs. (My mom sells scrubs; even to dentists, who, in my opinion, don't deserve such fine clothing.)

Margot tells me she got them from Sassy Scrubs, online; which totally ruins my chances at a new customer referral commission. She tells me that the fabric is called "Smile!", and asks if I like it. The print is of thousands of happy teeth brushing or flossing themselves, acting as if anthropomorphic disembodied bits of a hundred hockey players wasn't strange in the slightest. I told her, yes, it was very pretty. Pregnant ladies are hormonally on the edge and I didn't want to risk a gas "mishap" by offending her.

In bittersweet fashion, the teeth and the gas come closer. The mask goes around my head and I hear the heavenly hiss of nitrous. To accomplish this, Margot has to rest her gigantic baby belly on my chest. I start to wonder if the gas will work if the weight makes it impossible to breathe. To my horror, the teeth start bulging outward against me in pulses, and Margot apologizes for her twins' kicking. Twins! Twice the kicking! Twice the pulsing happy teeth!

Luckily, the gas takes effect, the phantom dentist comes in and does his evil business under cover of darkness, and I'm done and in the lobby, scheduling my next frightful visit. The nice thing about scheduling appointments two years in advance is that I get to pick whatever time I want. Cold comfort maybe, but I'll take what I can get. You know me, I'm an optimist.

Luckily, I grew up with a terrific dentist - Dr. Henry Fox - who rarely used gas or novocaine and rarely needed to, along with the special treat of a great plastic toy from the "toy bowl" at the end of each visit. To this day, I love going to the dentist. What I can't stand however, is getting my tires rotated. The hideous smell of all that greasy black rubber and the screams of the pneumatic drills and squealing metal sends me right back out the door, arms flailing, heart pounding and knees pumping.

Sunbathing in a Cemetery

Sometimes we encounter circumstances, or need to make decisions in our lives, which just cause our morality to hit a brick wall. Folks who wear Sassy Scrubs in their work lives experience this on a daily basis. Overcoming a personal dislike for a particularly antagonistic or obnoxious patient so that you can give him good health or dental care is one instance of this struggle.

I encountered a situation recently which made me think about this. I live in a small town. Ask Webster for the definition of podunk, back water, or hicksville and a photo of our lovely, but very quiet, town is all that is listed in the dictionary. That's it - just the photo. Everyone understands.

Anyway, I was driving down the main highway past the local cemetery one sunny afternoon and was surprised to see a young woman sunbathing. Not just sunbathing. Sunbathing atop one of the graves. And not just sunbathing. Sunbathing topless while sprawled across one of the graves. Needless to say, this sight surprised me and though I'm no prude, I have to admit I was somewhat shocked. Shocked that this young woman made the decision to sunbathe, topless, in a cemetery, with her head butted up to a headstone and sprawled across a grassy grave, with a bottle of tanning lotion at her side. Hmm....how does one make a conscious decision like that one? This was the best place she could find for sunbathing? The headstone kept her head cool and shaded while she toasted the rest of her? It was the quietest location to insure she would not be distracted from her earnest tanning quest? Her own backyard was already filled up with other sunbathers?

Now here's my moral dilemma to this scene. I have no problem with a young woman sunbathing and even sunbathing topless, though she was very close to a main highway and safety-wise it was not a smart decision on her part, if you ask me. My problem was that she was doing so atop some person's grandma or grandpa. Actually, atop Grandma or Grandpa's grave. There is probably no law against topless sunbathing in a cemetery (I doubt the town ever thought they'd need THAT law!) so it's not that it's WRONG. But it certainly is NOT RIGHT either.

So this is the moral brick wall. Sometimes we come up against situations where we need to make decisions about what may not necessarily be WRONG but we also know our decision may not be RIGHT either. Although the "wrong" decision is often obvious, the "not right" decision is often more subjective.

I've used this scenario several times to help me make decisions since that sunny day in our little podunk town. If I think I might go over the line into the "not right" territory, I think about the young woman who made that decision I witnessed. Let's hope none of the decisions you have to make today end up being the "not right" kind too. Sometimes it's a tough call, but I pretty much try not to make the mistake of being so NOT RIGHT that I'd be topless sunbathing in a cemetery.

I am a Paramedic and a few years ago while setting in front of the EMS station I was working at a Jack Russell dog ran into the roadway and was hit by a car right in front of myself and some EMT's on shift.

We immediately ran to the dog which was lying motionless on the road with blood coming from it's mouth and nose. We thought there was no way this little dog would survive, but knew we had to try. The dog was alive and someone suggested calling the Humane society or Police but we realized that they would probably just put the animal down on the spot. So we decided to try to get it emergency vet care.

About that time a sweet little lady who worked on a farm and also rescued animals pulled up to the scene. She called her Vet while myself and the rest of my EMS partners immobilized the dog onto a turkey tray the rescue lady had in her car (just the right size for the dog). After we completely immobilized the dog and applied bandages to stop the bleeding we covered it with a thick blanket to keep it warm. The lady reached her Vet, it was in the middle of the night, but the Vet agreed to care for the animal. The Lady rushed off and we never thought we would here from her or the little hurt dog again.

A few weeks later I just couldn't stand it and call all the vet clinics in the town where the Lady said she was going with the dog ( I didn't know the Vets name) and finally found the right one. The Vet told me the little Dog had survived thanks to the quick emergency care she received at the accident site by the EMS crew, and due to the rapid transport by the kind lady that stopped to help us. Also she said the dog had made a full recovery and due to the dog not having a collar and having no Idea if it was a homeless stray they had found it a forever home with a Lawyer friend.

I usually work people in emergencies, but am glad I had the chance to be a part of an animal rescue that turned out with such a happy ending. I am a animal lover and always have been. This night I felt I was finally able to do something for animals since they had always made my life so much more enjoyable.

To me, Spring means great shoes!

One of my favorite things about Spring weather, is that I get to go into my closet and pull out all of those great sandals and cute little shoes that have been hibernating all winter! And if they look a little too worn out from last year, what better way is there to spend a rainy Spring day than shopping for new shoes!

Does anyone else out there have a sandal or shoe fetish?! Come on now, I know I'm not alone.

I once thought that I had a lot of shoes until I met a dear friend from Connecticut. This woman takes shoe shopping to a whole new level. We were recently traveling together in India and I quickly discovered that she literally had to be dragged, kicking and screaming, through the streets of India where vendors were selling shoes! I was proud of her though; she showed great restrain on this year's trip. Last year she brought home a bag full of shoes! I'm talking more than 30 pair of shoes! Now that's a true "Shoe Lover!" (The name of the not-so innocent has been left out so that her husband doesn't find out. The total number of shoes actually purchased has also been altered to protect her right to shop for more.)

I'm curious..... After a long day spent in nursing shoes or Crocs, what do you nurses like to slip into for footwear?

Personally, I prefer sandals the most because they're easier to kick off during the day than a pair of sneakers or boots! I'm sure my mother still cringes when she hears about me running around in my bare feet. I've just can't help myself. I love the feel of fresh grass between my toes in the Spring and warm beach sand or hot grass under my feet in the Summer!

Scrubs Loan Closet Gets Off the Ground

After gasoline, groceries and regular monthly bills are taken care of these days, some folks find that there’s not much left in their bank accounts. Now, any Thompson Associates who find themselves in those shoes, even temporarily, have one less expense to worry about.
That’s thanks to the new Scrubs Loan Closet, a program created by Thompson’s Nursing Work-Life Council to ensure that the prospect of a uniform doesn’t present a hardship for anyone. If you’re not familiar with it, the Nursing Work-Life Council was created as part of the Magnet designation process to address quality of work life issues for nurses. “The program is based solely on donations from people who work here,” says Cristine Crawford, an RN in the Birthing Center who is on the council and helped organize the program. The need for the loan closet was identified through Associate Services, where staff sometimes sense that new hires who are required to wear scrubs cannot afford to buy their own. “Before you get that first paycheck, it’s kind of hard to go out and purchase some,” Cristine says. “Scrubs are not cheap.”

Deborah Gollus, Senior Recruiter, agrees. “If they’re coming from a non-healthcare background or a healthcare background with a different uniform requirement, it can be a burden,” she says. Associate Services brought the issue to the attention of the Work-Life Council, which got the program up and running on October 1, using a space in the corner of the 2 West conference room.

To stock the closet, Cristine sent out a MOX to fellow Associates. “The initial response was very good so there’s probably a lot more out there,” Cristine says, noting that she plans to send out occasional reminders. As of early this month, the closet featured scrubs of all sizes, both prints and solid colors. “We definitely could use some more smalls. We could use more of all sizes, actually,” Cristine says. Associates – whether they are new or having a hard time making ends meet – are welcome to help themselves to the closet’s contents at any time. “We didn’t want people to feel like they had to ask,” Cristine says.

The council asks that each person needing scrubs takes a maximum of two sets.If the people who benefit from the closet are able to donate the uniforms back to the closet in the future after they are able to purchase their own, it will keep the program going, Cristine says.

I grew up watching all those great sci-fi shows of the 70's and 80's. The characters were often beaming out or stepping through some mysterious portal to an altered reality and then trying to figure out how to get back to the world they knew before. This journey was always a tough feat, but our intrepid travelers generally made it.

Well, we can help you with your Altered Reality travels too. And it is way easier than those sci-fi characters could ever have imagined.

Sometimes our customers order their custom made Sassy Scrubs a bit too long, or a bit too large. Then they send us panicked emails asking how to fix the problem. Never fear! The Sassy Scrubs Alterations Department is on patrol - ready to help rescue you and get you back to your journey in well-fitting scrubs.

If you need a tweak here or there, a bit of hem shortening, a pocket moved or added, a pant leg taken in a bit or your Medical Scrubs Top taken down to the next size, we can absolutely Alter your Reality. Just email us with your request for alterations. We'll let you know how much to include with your garments to cover your return postage, and offer to Alter your Sassy Scrubs for free! That's right! A trip back to Reality, at no charge. What a deal!

Now, just as you can't create matter, we also can't make your garments longer, or larger than you originally ordered them. The Laws of Physics just don't work that way. It's the same thing in the Reality of Altering. So it's always the best idea to view our Size Chart before placing an order...think of it as your road map through the Reality of Fitting. (Oh brother, I know that was really bad...). Anyway, we're here to help you at Sassy Scrubs, and you can count on us to get you out of that Altered Reality and back to your well fitting scrubs world. A Look Back at That 70's CDA

How many of you get a laugh out of “That 70's Show” on TV? If you are like me, you smile as you recognise the fashion, fads, and familiar things from those days gone by. Perhaps like me, you are one of the 800+ CDABC members who have been in the profession for over 30 years. Remember the "old school" days when we were not required to wear personal protection in the workplace? Safety glasses were always recommended, but masks and gloves were not considered standard practice for most dental procedures.

During my training, hairstyles were kept neat and short or long and tied back. Jewelry was kept to a minimum and could include stud earrings, waterproof wristwatches, and wedding bands. Multiple body piercings, body art tattoos and artificial fingernails were uncommon and therefore not an issue. Routinely inspected natural, short, clean fingernails without colored nail polish were the rule. Our white laced “duty shoes” were always expected to be clean and polished. Two sets of interchangeable pantsuit type school uniforms were issued to us for the year, one set navy and the other pale blue. I did not consider them flattering and therefore declined to include a photo. White or pastel coloured dress and pantsuit uniforms were the norm in the dental office.

In those early days dental assisting students wore nurse’s caps. Did you know that Vancouver Community College / Vancouver Vocational Institute’s 12th graduating dental assisting class of 1975 had to earn their nurse’s caps? We wore them in clinic at VVI and the University of British Columbia’s dental school. It was suggested that our cap represented a “conscientious application of principles”. During our graduation ceremony we were awarded a red velvet ribbon stripe for our caps.

Our profession seemed so much more formal in those days. Nowadays many health care and dental professionals argue that they do not depend on uniforms for their authority and as a result the dress codes have also become more casual.

Originally, nurses wore white caps and uniforms to signify respectability, cleanliness, and servitude. Later caps became more symbolic, and were worn as a measure of achievement, occupational authority, and status.

Over the years, my own cap eventually wound up buried amongst Halloween costumes. Just recently, I retrieved and laundered it and now it has become a “classic” item which retains sentimental value. I like to show it to the younger generations and share my story with them.

Doing What You Love

Sassy Scrubs added a new staff member not too long ago. Kathy has learned her job at the speed of light and keeps us scrambling for new things to teach her. She often contacts our customers, just to see how they're doing. With her friendly voice and quick wit, our customers seem to be very glad she called. She's our Sassy Scrubs "Guest Writer" today and here's her story:

After having jobs with a lot of responsibility and having been home for about six months while I figured out what I wanted to do with myself, I made a list.

* I wanted to work close to home.
* I wanted a job that I wanted to go to when I got up in the morning.
* I wanted a job working for a nice company
* I wanted a "gentle" boss. One who would listen to my concerns and would discuss issues with me in a non-confrontational manner.

Isn't it interesting that none of the above issues are about money and benefits but about feelings and hoping to find a job where I could feel as if I was making a contribution and would feel appreciated?

After coming up with my list, I started thinking about companies in my area that fit the bill. I knew about Sassy Scrubs and the owner, Karen Bradley, so I peeled off a resume and a letter. I was thrilled when Karen called to set up an interview!

In my case, thinking about the big picture - what I really want in my life and what I don't want - have contributed to me having a job where, yes, I'm earning money and enjoying the benefit package, but I'm also happy. I like being happy!!

What's that old saying - find something you love to do that also earns money and you'll never really work a day in your life? As a grandmother who recently did that, I highly recommend you do it too!
